Li gravfält and Limmahögarna
Spectacular ancient ruins from a bygone era.
Ever since the Stone Age, Bräckan has been an important route for people traveling along the coast. It served as a land bridge that allowed people to cross between Lygnern and the Skagerrak without getting their feet wet. Fjärås is one of Halland’s parishes with the richest archaeological heritage. Here lies the Li burial ground, the county’s largest Iron Age burial ground. Today, there are over a hundred standing stones and some 40 other remains. There used to be nearly twice as many stones, but many disappeared when gravel was extracted from the site in the past. The tall stone, known as “King Frode’s Stone,” stands right by the road. It is especially beautiful here when the heather blooms in late summer.
Even older burial sites are the Limmahögarna, which date back to the Bronze Age. The size and location of the mounds suggest that important people were buried here. There were originally three Limmahögarna, but only one of them is well-preserved.
