Off the Onsala Peninsula lies the island of Nidingen. The island is a nature reserve and one of Halland’s finest birding spots. With familiar and unfamiliar birds as neighbors, and porpoises and seals swimming around the boat in the sea, you can spend the night in the charming lighthouse keeper’s cottages and discover this beautiful spot right in the middle of the Kattegat.

There are a total of four cottages on the island, so you’re pretty much guaranteed your own place to stay.

Getting Here

During the summer, boat tours run out to Nidingen.

Bird Island

Nidingen is one of Halland’s finest bird islands. The island is home to large populations of Kentish terns, black guillemots, and smew. Additionally, Sweden’s only colony of three-toed gulls is found here. A bird station has been located on the island for over 30 years. The Gothenburg Ornithological Society runs the station, which focuses on banding, research, and other bird studies. In 2010, over 12,000 birds of 103 different species were banded. During the summer, there are also seal colonies on the island. The island’s flora consists mainly of coastal plants such as sea beet, sea kale, sea rocket, sea aster, and sea wormwood.
